The Next Door Drummers, performing traditional African rhythms on percussion instruments, will kick the event off again this year. Founder and Executive Director Cooper Rust, the Artists FROM Africa and Joel Kioko, who had just been awarded a full-ride scholarship to the English National Ballet in London, will highlight the evenings with performances. Guests will also enjoy the musical talents of Dr. Jason Carpenter on keyboards and award winning Dreher High School Choir Director, vocalist Walter Graham. Charlie Goodrich from Town Theater, vocalist Lanny Spires and local dance group Fuse Artist Alliance will also perform. Artists For Africa’s 2017 Performance Art Event is being presented in a cabaret style format this year with many more of The Midlands finest artists on tap to lend their talents. All proceeds from this event go to benefit the free arts education programs for orphaned and impoverished children in Kenya. Artists For Africa was founded in 2012 by Columbia native and professional ballet dancer, Cooper Rust. After serving a summer internship with Anno’s Africa in Kibera slum, Nairobi, Ms. Rust was so profoundly moved by the children of Kenya and her experience that she returned to South Carolina determined to do more. She organized family and friends to form Artists For Africa and relocated to Nairobi to teach dance full time. In addition to free arts education programs, Artists for Africa also provides academic support and limited housing. Opened in September of 2016, The A4A House provides safe, supervised lodging, clean water, nutritious meals, clothing, academic support and safe transportation for scholarship students. In the short span of five years, Ms. Rust has also founded Dance Centre Kenya, a pre-professional dance academy to give students opportunities to dance full length programs such as The Nutcracker, Giselle and in the Spring of 2018, Cinderella.
